Seeking public feedback on our K-12 Health curriculum adoption!
In accordance with the Oregon Department of Education curriculum adoption cycle, the Rogue River School District is recommending adoption of a new K-12 Health Curriculum for the 2025-26 school year.
A committee of educators, parents, and administrators have reviewed curriculum following guidance and criteria from the Oregon Department of Education. The purpose of the committee is to evaluate and recommend to the school board a health curriculum that meets state requirements and guidelines and addresses the diverse needs of our students. The committee has come to a consensus on recommendation for adoption to the Rogue River School Board at the April public meeting. The public has the opportunity to review the materials that are being considered and give feedback through Tuesday, April 15th.
The committee’s recommendations for adoption are as follows:
- K-6: Children’s Health Market, The Great Body Shop
- 7-8: Children’s Health Market, The Great Body Shop
- 9-12: Human Kinetics, Live Well Comprehensive High School Health
Please review the K-12 Oregon State Standards for Health here.
As you review the materials, please take into consideration that according to School Board Policy IGAI: Human Sexuality, AIDS/HIV, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Health Education; The Rogue River School District teaches these components in grades 6 through 12, and parents of minor students shall be notified in advance of any human sexuality or AIDS/HIV instruction. Any parent may request that their child be excused from that portion of the instruction program and the procedures set forth in Oregon Revised Statute (ORS) 336.035(02).

Exemption from Instruction (Opting-Out):
Sexuality Education standards are included in the mandatory Health Education Standards. Health Education is a core subject in Oregon, and its instruction is required by every public school in Oregon.
It is encouraged that if a parent finds a portion of the content to be inappropriate, they opt out only of that portion and not the entire curriculum.
According to Oregon Law, parents can opt their children out of any or all sexuality education components. However, parents cannot opt their children out of the entire health course or program without written documentation of a religious or disability-related reason. In those cases, parents would also have to demonstrate to the school district how they would be complying with the Health Education Standards with alternative instruction.
If you wish to excuse your child from one or more health components after reviewing the curriculum, submit the appropriate opt out form to your building principal. Paper copies can also be accessed in the school office.
